Who we are

We are Scott and Phil, the builders of this M1078 expedition truck. Scott, rooted in the trucking industry, and Phil, a veteran of construction, brought their respective strengths together. The motivation for this 'Version 2.0' build came directly from Scott's own journey – living and traveling for 6 years in his previous truck.

We took everything learned from over 40,000 miles on the road – what worked, what didn't – and engineered those insights into every detail of this improved, more robust expedition vehicle.

Engineered for Any Terrain

This truck is built on the incredibly reliable 1998 (built in 2023) Stewart Stevenson M1078 platform.
Known for its simple mechanical design (like a school bus setup), parts are easy to find, making it ideal for remote travel.

Robust Base

Features a Cat 6.6L 3116 mechanical diesel engine and Allison Transmission.

Anti-Torsion System

The expedition box sits on a specialized subframe with an anti-torsion system, relieving stress from frame flexing and ensuring the box remains stable even on uneven ground.

Serious Ground Clearance

Enjoy 22 inches of ground clearance and an excellent departure angle in the rear.

46" Tires & CTIS

Rolls on massive Goodyear 395/85R20 tires with a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS), allowing you to adjust tire pressure from the cab for changing terrain (Highway, Cross Country, Sand, Emergency, Run Flat).

Built Stout

The entire structure is incredibly strong and durable – unlike many RVs, this box doesn't flex when you move around inside.

Comfortable Cruising, Proven Performance

While built like a mountain goat off-road, significant upgrades have made this truck remarkably comfortable for highway travel as well.

Upgraded Gears

High-speed gears provide a comfortable cruising speed around 60 mph and a top speed of 74 mph, keeping RPMs lower on the highway.

Cab-Air-Ride Suspension

A major upgrade that dramatically improves ride quality on and off the pavement – Scott wishes his original truck had this!

Enhanced Sound Deadening

A huge focus during the build was sound reduction, making the cab much quieter for long drives.

Low Mileage & Recent Service

With only 5500 miles, the truck has been recently serviced, including oil change, valve train adjustment, radiator work, drivelines balanced/replaced, and replacement of all fuel lines and belts.

Fuel & Range

A 56-gallon fuel tank provides a range of approximately 340-360 miles (at around 6 mpg).

Spacious & Functional Living, Anywhere

One of the standout features is the lifting expedition box, and an air-over-hydraulic system for raising and lowering the cab. When stopped, this creates a tall, open interior living space, offering far more comfort than standard RVs. The box is raised and lowered by four 12-volt linear actuators. Once raised, the actuators lock in any position. Set up the living space quickly.

Frequently Asked Question

What exactly is this truck, and what are its basic specs?

This is a 1998 Stewart Stevenson M1078 Light Medium Tactical Vehicle (LMTV) that has been professionally converted into an expedition truck. It features a reliable Cat 6.6L 3116 mechanical diesel engine and an Allison Transmission. It has only 5500 miles on it and sits on heavy-duty 46" Goodyear tires with a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS).

Who built the expedition box and what is their experience?

The box was custom-designed and built by Scott (from the heavy equipment/trucking industry) and Phil (25 years in construction). This is their second build, specifically improving upon lessons learned from Scott living and traveling over 40,000 miles in his previous expedition truck, making this a proven 'Version 2.0'.

How does the unique lifting expedition box work, and how long does it take to set up?

The expedition box features a roof that lifts using an 12v dc linear actuators (with a manual backup). This creates a spacious, full-height interior living area when parked. Lifting the box takes approximately 1 minute 33 seconds, and deploying the optional stabilizers takes about 2 minutes, allowing for very quick setup.

What is the interior living space like, particularly the bed and dinette?

The interior is designed for comfort and functionality. A key feature is the bed system which lifts to the roof, allowing the dinette below to be fully usable even when someone is sleeping upstairs. The dinette also converts into an additional bed. The well-insulated box features ample storage, a complete bathroom (with shower and composting toilet), a kitchen area, and effective mini-split AC/Heating.

FAQ image

Is the truck difficult to drive, and what is its fuel range?

Despite its size, it's surprisingly easy and comfortable to drive thanks to features like the Cab-a-Ride suspension, sound deadening, and updated high-speed gears (comfortable cruising at 60 mph). It gets about 6 miles per gallon, giving it a range of approximately 340-360 miles on its 56-gallon tank.
